Deixem enrere l'any de les revoltes, les àrabs, és clar, però sobretot la dels “indignats”, que és la més pròxima i la que ens ha interpel·lat directament

Disposem de recursos tècnics que ens permeten detectar en l'aire de Riudarenes partícules d'un perfum abocat quinze dies abans damunt d'un mocador a Xangai o localitzar, entre les bardisses de Viladrau, restes d'un pesticida escampat a la més remota de les ciutats siberianes. Diuen, a més, que la distància entre dues persones desconegudes, situades a qualsevol indret del planeta, és, a tot estirar, de quatre o cinc individus. Qui pot negar, doncs, que el món s'ha encongit i que ara les notícies que omplen les pàgines més estrictament locals contenen sempre aspectes que transcendeixen els límits de la seva geografia? No hi ha refugi per mantenir-se a resguard de les obsessions o de les esclavituds de l'Obama o de la Merkel. No hauria de sorprendre, doncs, que una humil crònica comarcal coincideixi amb la revista Time a l'hora d'evocar l'adveniment dels “indignats” com a fenomen de l'any. De la mateixa manera que aquí podem rememorar el 2010 per aquell dia de juliol en què sota un sol aclaparador una multitud efervescent de catalans emprenyats va cridar independència, haurem de recordar el 2011 com l'any de les revoltes. Les àrabs, és clar, però sobretot la dels “indignats”, que és la més pròxima i la que ens ha interpel·lat més directament. Aquell impuls de plantar-se a les places i proposar un món alternatiu, té un origen similar a la dels emprenyats del 2010: la percepció ardent de la injustícia i la ineptitud dels canals formals per oposar-s'hi. I els dèficits democràtics, i la constatació que el sistema està viciat i que existeixen complicitats polítiques, econòmiques i mediàtiques que el condicionen.
Si la submissió de la voluntat democràtica a les dèries d'un tribunal decrèpit va enervar la consciència col·lectiva d'aquest país, les humiliants conseqüències de la crisi i la genuflexió dels interessos generals davant dels poders econòmics que l'han provocat van saturar els ànims, i gràcies a internet i a les noves possibilitats comunicatives, aquí, a Atenes o a Wall Street, les places es van omplir d'indignació. Es veu que a les nostres societats la lobotomia no ha estat absoluta, que encara hi ha indicis de vida. Les perspectives ombrívoles que ho expliquen no han fet res més que agreujar-se. La frustració quotidiana en un món que desborda estímuls, la precarietat i l'explotació laborals, les irritants desigualtats i la incapacitat política de resoldre-ho, en aquesta amarga era de les retallades no paren d'augmentar, per tant, no cal una gran perspicàcia per entendre que el fenomen de la indignació té futur.
És l'única bona notícia que podem anunciar. I no només perquè és agradable sentir de nou invocacions a la justícia social i a la solidaritat, sinó perquè les raons de la crisi, les desregulacions, les polítiques econòmiques i fiscals que l'han desencadenat, són perfectament identificables i fins que no ens vegin suficientment indignats (i també perillosament), no les modificaran.

Barra: China to top medals tables at London Games

LONDON (AP)—An Italian sports official who projects Olympic medals resultspredicts that China will top the overall and gold medal count ahead of the U.S.and Russia at the London Games.

Luciano Barra issued his final medal projection Wednesday based on resultsat the most recent world championships of Olympic sports.
Barra, a former senior member of the Italian Olympic Committee, has Chinawinning 103 total medals—43 gold, 31 silver and 29 bronze.
He predicts the U.S. will finish second with 82 medals—35 gold, 19 silverand 28 bronze. He has Russia third with 76 overall— 30, 22 and 24.
At the 2008 Beijing Games, China topped the gold medal table with 51. TheU.S. was second with 36 gold but had more overall with 110 medals, 10 more thanChina.

French-directed silent film The Artist, a tribute to the pre-"talkies" era, won six Golden Globe nominations on Thursday to lead the field as Hollywood gears up for its annual awards season.

Tied for second were The Help, about black servants in the pre-civil rights era US south, and The Descendants starring George Clooney, both nominated in five categories for the Globes, to be presented next month.

Other "A" listers nominated included Angelina Jolie, Meryl Streep -- and even Elton John and Madonna, in what one commentator said showed the Globes organisers' desire to get celebrities on the red carpet.

But The Artist was the big winner, triggering elation from its French director Michel Hazanavicius.

"I feel like I have a big, stupid smile on my face. I made this movie out of desire, and never expected this sort of response," he told the Hollywood Reporter.

The Golden Globe winners will be announced on January 15, in a show hosted for a third time by provocative British comic Ricky Gervais, invited back despite allegedly ruffling feathers at last year's show.

The Artist was nominated for categories including best comedy or music film, best comedy or music actor for Jean Dujardin, best director, and best supporting actress -- for Hazanavicius's wife Berenice Bejo.

The movie -- which tells the story of silent film star George Valentin (Dujardin) whose career is torpedoed by the arrival of speech -- had already generated buzz after winning best film and best director at the New York Film Critics Circle two weeks ago.

Canada condemned at home and abroad for pulling out of Kyoto treaty

China calls Canada's decision 'preposterous', while Greenpeace says the country is protecting polluters instead of people

Canada has been condemned at home and abroad as "irresponsible" and "reckless" for pulling out of the Kyoto climate treaty, just a day after committing to a future legally binding deal at a major UN climate summit.

"I regret Canada's withdrawal and am surprised over its timing," said the UN climate chief Christiana Figueres. "Canada has a moral obligation to itself and future generations to lead in the global effort." China, which agreed for the first time to legal limits on its emissions at the summit in Durban, denounced Canada's decision as "preposterous" in its state media and called it "an excuse to shirk responsibility" in tackling global warming.

The domestic reaction was equally fierce with the announcement by Canada's environment minister, Peter Kent, described as "shameful" and "a total abdication of our responsibilities". Under the Kyoto protocol, Canada was committed to cutting its greenhouse gas emissions by 6% by 2012, compared to its 1990 levels. But its actual emissions have risen by over 30%, making failure inevitable. Canada's inaction was blamed by some on its desire to protect the lucrative but highly polluting exploitation of tar sands, the second biggest oil reserve in the world.

Kent claimed that Canada would have to pay billions to meet its Kyoto target in 2012: "To meet the targets would be the equivalent of … the transfer of CAN$14bn [£8.7bn] from Canadian taxpayers to other countries – the equivalent of $1,600 from every Canadian family – with no impact on emissions or the environment." He was referring to the cost of buying carbon emission permits (AAUs) from other countries to compensate for Canada's huge overshooting of its target.

But China dismissed Kent's claim that emission cuts damage economies as a "fallacy". A UK government spokesman said: "It's true that taking action to reduce emissions requires substantial financial investment but it is far less expensive than the cost of inaction." Canada's decision was "deeply regrettable", he added.

Figueres said other Kyoto protocol members such as Australia and the EU had been investing in a green and sustainable future and Canada's rising carbon emissions put it in a "weaker position" to demand carbon limits on fast-growing countries such as China and India. In Durban all countries, including China, India, Canada and the US, agreed for the first time to be legally bound to cut carbon, although Canada was given the"colossal fossil" award by campaign groups in Durban for its "reckless arrogance".

Warren Mabee, director of the Queen's Institute for Energy and Environmental Policy in Ontario, said: "Our economy is becoming ever more dependent upon the riches of the oil sands and other energy products. Ultimately, either we'll run out [of these fossil fuels] or the world will decide that it doesn't want them any more. The latter option is much more likely."

The Canadian government has been lobbying hard against international restrictions on its tar sands fuels, which result in much greater carbon emissions than conventional crudes. The Guardian revealed in November that the UK government had given Canada secret diplomatic help to block proposed European penalties on tar sands.

"The Harper government is more concerned about protecting polluters than people," said Greenpeace Canada's Mike Hudema. Pulling out of Kyoto was "a total abdication of our responsibilities", said Hannah McKinnon of Climate Action Network Canada. "Canada gave its word to the world and Canada broke its word," said the columnist John Ibbitson in Canada's Globe and Mail. "No one should feel anything other than ashamed."

Japan, which like Canada had said it would not sign up to an extension of the Kyoto protocol, still condemned Canada's withdrawal from the existing protocol as "disappointing". China's foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said: "It flies in the face of the efforts of the international community for Canada to leave the Kyoto protocol at a time when the Durban meeting made important progress by securing a second phase of commitment."

An official in India said Canada's decision could jeopardise any gains made at the Durban meeting. The climate official Ian Fry, from the tiny South Pacific island nation of Tuvalu, one of those most at risk from rising sea levels, said: "It's an act of sabotage on our future, a reckless and totally irresponsible act."

Canada is within its rights to withdraw from the Kyoto protocol, according to the lawyer Josh Roberts, at the environmental law organisationClientEarth. He pointed out that article 27 of the protocol allows any country to withdraw three years after the protocol is in force, a deadline that has passed.

Roberts said the get-out clause was fairly standard in international treaties, but was scarcely ever used. "Countries can trigger these release clauses, but it happens very rarely. For example, Japan, Norway and Iceland all left the International Whaling Commission's treaty, but such moves are rare."

In short, Robert said: "The Kyoto protocol has very few teeth beyond international diplomatic censure." But the UK's secretary of state for energy and climate change, Chris Huhne, said: "They are still bound by what was agreed in Durban. They are still part of working towards a legal outcome in 2015."

“Ha de quedar clar que defensarem el català per tot arreu i amb tots els mitjans al nostre abast, perquè hi ha coses amb les quals no es pot jugar i la nostra llengua és una d'elles”. Així de contundent s'ha mostrat el president de la Generalitat de Catalunya, Artur Mas, després de l'acte institucional de la Diada celebrat al parc de la Ciutadella, on tota la classe política i tots els assistents, excepte la presidenta del PP a Catalunya, Alícia Sánchez Camacho, han aplaudit l'aferrissada defensa del model lingüístic català feta per Màrius Serra.

Català a l'atac

L'escriptor i lingüista Màrius Serra ha participat en els actes amb una glossa a Pompeu Fabra per commemorar el centenari de la secció filològica de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans. El text li ha servit, però, per fer una encesa defensa del model lingüístic català i la immersió a l'escola. “En el segon segle de la secció filològica de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans, necessitem més immersió lingüística que mai”, ha etzibat Serra, que ha acabat el seu parlament amb un “Català a l'atac! Visca la llengua viva!”. El públic de l'acte ha contestat ràpidament aixecant-se de les seves cadires per aplaudir i amb crits a favor de la independència. Una gran ovació per part de tot l'auditori, excepte de la presidenta del Partit Popular de Catalunya, Alícia Sánchez Camacho, que ha optat per ventar-se.

En aquest context, Mas, que s'ha negat a contestar els periodistes en castellà “en un dia com avui”, ha detallat després: “No pretenem importunar ni indignar ni molestar ningú, simplement és la nostra llengua des de fa més de 800 anys, és l'ADN de la nostra identitat i, fins i tot, hi ha gent que va perdre la vida per defensar-la. I, per tant, ha de quedar clar que la defensarem per tot arreu i amb tots els mitjans al nostre abast”.

Dit això, i en preguntar-li per futurs acords amb els populars, ha advertit que “hi ha temes que, per col·laborar, han de ser respectats”. “Es tracta de respectar la identitat i els símbols del país. Es tracta de defensar les lleis del Parlament”, ha argumentat el president.

En aquesta línia, ha destacat que la seva anunciada “transició nacional catalana” cap a cotes de sobirania més elevades està en marxa, accelerada en part pels atacs a la llengua i l'autogovern catalans, que contribueixen a atreure més gent cap a les tesis catalanistes.

“Els que ja estaven convençuts, segueixen convençuts, i els que no n'estaven tant, veient com se'ns tracta moltes vegades en coses molt sensibles i veient el tracte econòmic que rebem, s'apunten més a les tesis catalanistes”, ha assegurat.

Ara bé, segons el president del govern, “no es tracta d'un moviment estrictament polític. La transició nacional catalana, en el fons, és que en les ments i els sentiments de la gent de Catalunya vagi quallant aquesta necessitat de més sobirania i més llibertat”

The fine art of medical diagnosis

Making 'ward rounds' at the National Gallery, doctors have uncovered murder, syphilis and all manner of ills

At the Sainsbury Wing of London's National Gallery, in Room 58, a painting by the 15th-century Italian artist Piero di Cosimo of a woman lying on her side has been hung opposite Botticelli's Venus and Mars. The fame of the latter makes it a significant attraction for visitors. Yet those who shuffle past Cosimo's canvas miss an intriguing work, not just for its enigmatic content but for the unexpected way it shows how art can be opened up through scientific scrutiny.

The painting shows a young woman, half-clothed, lying on the ground as a satyr crouches over her corpse. According to the gallery's guidebook, the work – A Satyr Mourning over a Nymph – depicts the death of Procris, daughter of the king of Athens, who was accidentally killed by her husband Cephalus during a deer hunt. Put "death of Procris" into Google and the search throws up countless versions of Cosimo's painting.

But Professor Michael Baum, one of Britain's leading cancer experts, and a keen art critic, will have none of this. "This is not a depiction of the accidental death that Ovid wrote about," he says. "It is a painting about a murder, and a very nasty one at that."

Baum's interpretation is based on artistic and medical sleuthing which he has been carrying out for the past two decades. Every year he organises an artistic "ward round" for his students, one that takes them through the rooms of the National Gallery in order to show them how medical and scientific knowledge gives a new perspective to classical paintings – and to show how art can provide new insights for a young doctor.

"Dozens of papers have been written up, and published in respected journals, by our students on subjects that range from syphilis to Paget's disease of the skull as a result of the observations they have made in the gallery," says Baum. "It's a great way to learn medicine and appreciate art."

Now Baum, visiting professor of medical humanities at University College London, is widening his audience. At the British Science Festival in Bradford, he will give a lecture, Picture of Health: The Art of Medicine, which will highlight the importance of art in medical practice, and vice versa, and which will be based on his science tours of the National Gallery, including his studies of Cosimo's painting.

"The official guide explanation that accompanies A Satyr Mourning over a Nymph indicates that it shows a woman who has been killed after being struck accidentally by a spear," says Baum. "This is consistent with the story of Procris and Cephalus. However, there are all sorts of clues that show this interpretation to be wrong.

"Look at her hands, for example. Both are covered with deep lacerations. There is only one way she could have got those. She has been trying to fend off an attacker who has come at her, slashing in a frenzied manner with a knife or possibly a sword. Certainly there is no way that a spear could have done that."

There are other clues, adds Baum. The woman's left hand is bent backwards, in a position known by surgeons as "the waiter's tip", typical someone who has received a serious injury at points C3 and C4 on the cervical cord. The severing at these points causes nerve damage that makes the wrist flex and the fingers curl up in the manner of a waiter taking a backhanded tip.

"The wound in her throat also corresponds to the idea that her cervical cord was severed at the C3/C4 position. So what we are looking at is a picture of a woman who has had her throat cut after desperately trying to defend herself from a knife-wielding killer. This is not the outcome of a romantic tragedy. This is the result of a brutal murder."

Intriguingly, Cosimo may still have been trying to depict the death of Procris, adds Baum. The painter may simply have been the victim of his own acute observational powers. "I think he may well have gone to a mortuary and asked to be allowed to paint the body of a young woman and got the body of one who had been murdered by knife – and so he faithfully put on to his canvas what he saw. It just happens not to accord with our modern understanding of what would have happened to a woman struck accidentally by a spear."

The key point of teaching medicine in this manner is that it broadens students' views of their subject. "Art and medicine have parallel histories: accurate drawings of dissections were crucial for anatomical education, for example, while art therapy has provided patients with powerful cathartic releases. And now when we look with a trained eye, it is clear these artists had considerable medical knowledge and often used it with considerable subtlety."

Consider Agnolo Bronzino's great work, An Allegory with Venus and Cupid, which is hung in Room 8 in the National Gallery. Painted around 1545, this is considered to be Bronzino's masterpiece, a work rich in classical symbolism. It was probably commissioned by Cosimo de' Medici and sent to King Francis I of France as a gift, an erotic work intended to be enjoyed in privacy. "It may have been commissioned to titillate," says Baum. "But it depicts something very different. It is an express warning about the dangers of syphilis."

The detailed unravelling of the symbolism behind An Allegory with Venus and Cupid is the handiwork of Christopher Cook, one of Baum's students, and is outlined in a paper in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. "In the 50 years prior to the Allegory's conception, Europe was introduced to a new disease – syphilis," states Cook in his paper. "Within the classical mythology and stylised imagery of the Allegory lies Bronzino's health message; with unchaste love comes not only joy and pleasure but also painful consequence."

That message, it should be noted, has been lost over the years. Most guides merely describe the work as erotic but enigmatic – which is perhaps not surprising given the obscurity of the symbolism employed by Bronzino. The analysis by Baum and his students only serves to underscore the importance of looking at these works from a medical perspective.

Other diagnoses in Baum's "ward round" of the National Gallery include Massys's An Old Woman (or The Ugly Duchess), whose strange appearance is given fresh scientific analysis with a little help from Leonardo da Vinci; a self-portrait of Rembrandt aged 63, whose subtle red spots on his cheeks and dilated blood vessels under his right eye indicate that he was suffering from rosacea, a permanent reddening of facial tissue; and Joseph Wright of Derby's An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, which depicts the first flowering of proper physiological experimentation.

And, finally, there is a stop at Holbein's The Ambassadors, a powerful, enigmatic depiction of two 16th-century nobleman that is distinctive for its use of anamorphosis, a distorted perspective that provides a key to understanding a cryptic message. In this case a streak across the bottom of the canvas is revealed to be a human skull when viewed from the lower right-hand side of the painting.

"Essentially, Holbein was inviting people to stand in this position and, from there, the painting's message becomes a bit clearer, though it still takes considerable analysis to work out what is going on. In fact, it turns out to be a coded warning to Henry VIII – to whose court these two ambassadors had been sent – about the dangers of damnation he faced in breaking away from the Catholic church.

"However, the main reason for showing this work to medical students is to stress the importance of good observation and to be on guard for clues. A disease's symptoms are often confusing, and it is vital to take note of everything that is being presented. Holbein had a lesson for us all."

Seen through Baum's eyes, the entire National Gallery looks more like a doctor's waiting room: Monet's paintings, which grew darker and darker until his cataracts were operated on and his works brightened again; Van Gogh's disturbed canvases, which suggest madness induced by syphilis; and the works of Renoir, which were completed despite the fact he was crippled with rheumatoid arthritis and could not lift a brush above shoulder height. "We have works by the world's best painters here and they tell us so much about the human condition. Rather than take away from that, science and medicine actually add to this appreciation," says Baum.

In contrast to most renaissance works, this figure is notable for her grotesque appearance. It was thought to be a mocking comment about old women who go to ridiculous lengths to recreate their youth. Not so, says Baum. This was almost certainly a specific woman (who may also have been depicted by Leonardo da Vinci) who suffered from a rare medical condition. The sunken eyes, the deformed hands, the unusual distance between her upper lip and nose, distorted nostrils and other features are all consistent with the bone ailment Paget's disease. "This was not a satire but a depiction of an individual with a specific disease," says Baum.

Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve were ambassadors for France, and superficially this is a standard double portrait. But the strange instruments behind them, the distorted skull at their feet, and other objects suggest a deeper message. "There is nothing medical here but the techniques needed to decode the work are similar to those needed to unravel medical conditions," says Baum. "What gives the painting away is the tiny crucifix in the top left and the instruments between the two men. Analysis show these devices are pointing to the date of Easter 1533 when it was thought the Second Coming would arrive. It was intended to be a warning those, Henry VIII included, who would suffer if they broke from the church of Rome before that day.

Crucial to understanding Bronzino's Allegory are the images painted around the main figures of Cupid and Venus. A cherub stands on a bed of nails and clearly feels no pain. "This is the condition tabes dorsalis and it is caused by tertiary syphilis," says Baum. "In addition, the broken arrow in Venus's right hand is a symbol of impotence while in the top left of the canvas, a woman's profile has been painted - with the back of her head missing. She has lost her mind, in short." Below this figure, a toothless man clutches head; his reddened fingers and patchy hair are also symptoms of syphilis. "The work may seem erotic but it is really meant to be a warning about the dangers of sexual disease."

Isn't the Democrat/Republican choice in the US really a choice between good and evil?" someone tweeted me during last week's Republican debate in Iowa. On the one hand, such a reductive perspective only exacerbates the dysfunctionally hyper-partisan current state of American politics, with the Republicans retreating to a wing so far right it would have given their beloved Ronald Reagan whiplash.

On the other hand, the message did arrive just moments after the morally repulsive Rick Santorum had finished explaining that abortions must be denied even to victims of rape and incest because the baby shouldn't be "victimised twice", concentrating so deeply on maintaining his sanctimonious facial expression that he hadn't the mental space to consider that maybe it would be the raped woman who would be victimised twice if she were to be denied an abortion if she wished to have one. But then, of course, it's hard to answer intelligently when one talks out of one's arse and the brain is therefore so far away from one's speaking orifice.

Anal vocalisation is not the only explanation for much of the Grand Old party's (GOP) behaviour and pronouncements in recent days: rather, it is, I can exclusively reveal, currently engaged in a mash-up of 1984 and It's a Wonderful Life, two pieces of fiction created over 60 years ago, which goes some way to explaining the distinct smack of irrelevance to the party today.

Despite having been written by one of those dreaded European socialists, 1984 appears to be the guidebook for today's Republican contenders. Even aside from the crazed fascination with sex some of them have (the Iowa debate also provided a platform for Santorum to explicate, again, his theory that gay marriage is the same as polygamy, having presumably decided that his worn-down-to-the-nub rib-tickler that homosexuality is analogous to bestiality needed a bit of sprucing up) which would impress 1984's Junior Anti-Sex League, the frank use of doublethink has been if not quite impressive then certainly unembarrassed.

Doublethink is, according to Orwell, "the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them … To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient …"

This is different from simply lying, which – as we live in what Tom Cruise once snarled is "a cynical, cynical world" – is expected from most politicians. Doublethink is looking at the truth and seeing just a reflection of one's desired self. It is the only explanation for Michele Bachmann's insistence that the credit downgrade was due to the raising of the debt ceiling, even though it was largely, S&P said in its statement, because of her and her fellow Tea Partyists' "contentious and fitful" wrangling. She claimed on NBC's Meet the Press on Sunday that one should never "mess with the full faith and credit of the United States", and yet that is precisely what she did.

Bachmann has said that wives "are to be submissive to their husbands" and, as Sarah Posner wrote this week on Salon, this idea, of the woman being "the obedient helpmeet, the vessel for the children, the devoted mother and warrior for the faith" is "central to the faith of many evangelicals". Yet when asked about it directly in the Iowa debate and again on Sunday on NBC, Bachmann retranslated "submit" to mean "respect", even though one could argue that their meanings are if not diametrically opposite, then at least on the quarter angle. It's enough to make one sentimental for English reappropriation of the "refudiate" kind. But where Palin only seeks publicity, Bachmann is a far scarier proposition.

Just as Bachmann was explaining her "submit"/"feminist" theory in the Iowa debate, John McCain's wife, Cindy, took to Twitter to complain: "I am so disgusted with how disrespectful the media is to all Republican woman [sic] in politics." Aside from the striking originality of accusing others of misogyny against a woman who was at that moment explaining the value of submission to one's husband, McCain presumably hadn't heard some of the things members of her own family had said about a certain Republican woman in the past, such as Meghan McCain's complaint that Sarah Palin was ruining her love life.

Perhaps the most blatant use of doublethink was Mitt Romney's self-serving claim last week that "corporations are people, my friend", which managed to be both deeply Orwellian as well as sounding like an offcut from It's a Wonderful Life. It doesn't even require a tiptoe of imagination, let alone a leap, to envisage Lionel Barrymore as evil Mr Potter cackling to James Stewart as poor George Bailey: "Corporations are people, George!"

(Incidentally, a version of this self-entitled mentality was echoed by Megyn Kelly on Fox News, the GOP mouthpiece, last week when she ferociously defended her right to maternity leave, despite having derided "entitled programmes" in the past. As Jon Stewart pointed out: "They're really only entitlements when they're something other people want. When it's something you want, they're a hallmark of a civilised society.")

Doublethink is the inevitable result of a Republican party that has become so McCarthyite; where homophobia, anti-abortion beliefs, Christianity verging on the evangelical, disbelief in science and a refusal to accept that rich people should be taxed more are essential so as not to be accused of being a Rino (Republican in name only). And there is no colder proof of doublethink than the look of moral superiority on a candidate's face when they are describing their wholly immoral beliefs that exist purely to cause misery, such as an "unblemished record" of homophobic policies (Bachmann). Is this evil? It's dystopian.

The advocate and the meritocrat: Lady Gaga’s empowerment anthems go up against Beyoncé’s spritzy competence.

Three women run the pop world right now. Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way,” Beyoncé’s “4,” and Adele’s “21” split the market into neat thirds without too much conceptual jostling. Adele’s impeccably sung collection of unperturbing soul, “21,” released in February, will almost certainly be the year’s biggest-selling album. Her career is likely to be long, because she is selling to the demographic that decides American elections: middle-aged moms who don’t know how to pirate music and will drive to Starbucks when they need to buy it. The rest of the population has Gaga and Beyoncé.

Beyoncé’s previous album, “I Am . . . Sasha Fierce,” from 2008, was a commercial success, more or less, but it failed an aesthetic contest that Beyoncé willingly entered, one that is apparent in the title. Sasha Fierce is allegedly Beyoncé’s alter ego, and, as she explained to Parade, in 2006, “She’s too aggressive, too strong, too sassy, too sexy! I’m not like her in real life at all.” This is easy to believe. Even Beyoncé’s fans might be hard-pressed to remember which of her songs are Fierce numbers. (Videos indicate that Ms. Fierce prefers slightly heavier eyeliner.) Beyoncé Knowles is America’s Sweetheart, and she does transgressive about as well as Matthew McConaughey does lawyerly. We don’t buy misbehavior any stronger than an appletini from Beyoncé, and we don’t need to.

Earlier this year, Michelle Obama chose Beyoncé’s “Get Me Bodied”—rewritten slightly as “Move Your Body”—as the theme song of her “Let’s Move!” fitness campaign. In May, as seen on YouTube, a gym full of students at Harlem’s P.S. 161 performed the official routine to the song, only to be surprised ninety seconds in by Knowles herself, in tight white pants, a white tank top, a blond blowout, and four-inch heels. Without a wobble, she performs the routine with the kids, who manage not to lose their cool while an enormously famous person steps, dips, and bobs next to them. Knowles has the Colgate smile, the ability to establish quick intimacy, and the attention to detail (touch a shoulder, make eye contact, gauge the back of the room) that a certain kind of pop star needs. They are the qualities that most politicians depend on—whatever enables one to be immediately present and transparent.

Lady Gaga, by contrast, is all distance and transgressiveness. She shows up in our lives, but only as close as her commercials for Google allow. (She’s the only pop star big enough to negotiate with Google.) Gaga has her own way of being family-friendly, which makes the idea of Sasha Fierce seem like a halting crayon sketch. At the after-party for the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards, two weeks ago, having been presented with the Fashion Icon Award, Gaga danced with her father, Joe Germanotta, in a bodysuit that was only a millimetre or two away from being transparent. Even when Dad’s in the room, Gaga has no interest in playing to the middle. Her body-distorting outfits and avid embrace of the gay community don’t scare many: “Born This Way,” released on May 23rd, sold 1.1 million units in its first week, the most since 50 Cent’s “The Massacre,” in 2005. But in the second week the album’s sales were down drastically, by eighty-four per cent, placing her next to Adele, who was sticking close to the same chart position she has maintained in the seventeen weeks since the release of her record.

Gaga’s record is hysterical on every level (except the Freudian). The cover shows her head, teeth bared and hair teased into a manic clump, in place of the headlight on a chopper-style motorcycle.

“Born This Way” is all anthems, and most of them empower something or someone. The title track is already confusing people around the world, who are tempted to start singing Madonna’s “Express Yourself ” at some point during the song. Here the melody and the sentiment of Madonna’s 1989 single are turbocharged (which detractors would say applies to all aspects of Gaga’s relationship to Madonna). What was implicitly gay is now explicit; what was implicitly religious now has actual Biblical references. It works, though without the exuberance or the lightness of “Express Yourself.”

Lightness is not something that Gaga cares for. “Born This Way” is a brick. Examine the sound-wave form of the album on a computer screen, and you will see a solid bar, free of any dynamic spikes or divots. Loud loud loud. And the heaviness extends to the quality of Gaga’s rhetorical moves. “Judas”? Totally into him! “Government Hooker”? Done that. (The word “government” is the only political aspect of the song. Mostly, it is about sex, role-play, and properly recorded synthesizers.)

Gaga has not abandoned the core element of her craft—the steady thump of Euro disco, a beat accessible to people who are older than the misfit club kids who find religion at her live shows. Gaga has also not changed her declarative tic, the stutter that watermarks tracks like “Just Dance” and “Telephone”: hair is “ha-ai-ai-ai-ai-air” and Judas is “Ju-da-ah-as.” And if she has made an attempt to escape Madonna’s shadow it is impossible to discern. “Americano” is the faux-Latin disco song that reprises the faux-Latin “Alejandro,” from last year, both of them descendants of Madonna’s own “La Isla Bonita.”

The indebtedness and the stylistic confusion do not keep “Born This Way” from being immensely fun. The biggest shift on this album is deliciously pointless; after more than ten years of people plundering the eighties for synthesizers and asymmetrical hair, Gaga has reached back to the Top Forty of that decade and borrowed the kind of saxophone and guitar solos we used to get from Bruce Springsteen’s horn player Clarence Clemons and from Queen’s Brian May. To achieve chart-topping verisimilitude, Gaga simply hired Clemons and May to noodle in all their irony-killing glory.

None of this exquisite camp and mild transgressiveness cheapens the advances she has made in terms of acceptance on behalf of the L.G.B.T. community, which has a clutch of champions in the mainstream media but none bigger than Gaga. And there is one unexpected transgression that will carry Ms. Germanotta into middle age: she can sing and play piano like a pro. No matter how much high art and green vomit she shoehorns into her live shows, she always clears out fifteen minutes to sit by herself at the piano and sing into submission those audience members who still care about criticisms like “prefabricated” and “packaging.” Gaga is a musician, which is largely buried under the carnival float she has decided to run through pop music. It doesn’t much matter, though. Madonna was less of a singer, but a clearer director, and had a sense for the pop single which Gaga has yet to match. Pop isn’t classical or jazz, and as a primarily recorded form it doesn’t reward the most gifted players. The song is the thing.

Beyoncé has always known this, and, as a gifted singer and vocal arranger, she has the good sense to know when to hire heavyweight co-writers. Her album “4” is a savvy retrenchment after “I Am . . . Sasha Fierce.” It is a brief, expert, and only occasionally dull piece of R. & B. The album’s goals are modest, and it has a comfortable and fleet sequencing. Gaga may eventually ditch the Halloween theatrics and end up ghostwriting for younger singers, but Beyoncé will likely stay in the game as long as she can, and is already moving her material away from the dance floor and toward the couch. There is only one song here that matches the physicality of songs like “Get Me Bodied,” though the album is by no means all ballads. The record is largely about Beyoncé’s steely, expansive voice, which is in its prime. The musical jitter and Silly String of a record like “Born This Way” are absent—almost all the musical moves are there to frame the singing. Long stretches of the slow-burning “I Care” are given over to Beyoncé’s voice and a faithful sidecar of drums and synthesizers that don’t dare challenge the headliner for real estate. Beyoncé’s politics are much less clear than Gaga’s. The album’s first single, “Run the World (Girls),” is supposedly an empowerment anthem, but it’s unlikely to convince anyone that women “run this mother.” The beats are pleasantly fractured and spiky, though Beyoncé is lost in a stew of noises and sounds. Her voice keeps switching registers and tonal filters, until we’re distracted into a puzzled stasis. What’s the fuss?

The album’s best song neatly disables the politics of “Run the World (Girls).” “Countdown” is a sinuous affirmation of a couple’s sexual chemistry, set to a patchwork of backbeat R. & B. and assorted syncopations that color and splinter the song. Beyoncé is so tied to her man that she’s likely to find herself “all up in the kitchen in my heels / dinner time.”

It’s hard to think of Beyoncé as an advocate for anything but an ideal of spritzy competence. She is a quiet meritocrat, celebrating the pleasure of doing things well and not making a particularly big deal of it. Which is a fairly unisex sentiment, if you’re listening closely. For those who need a firmer guiding hand, Gaga can push you along. ♦

No tuvieron que irse a la guerra, la guerra vino a buscarlos. Desde 2007 hasta ahora, más de 40.000 mexicanos han muerto víctimas de la guerra que sostienen calle a calle las organizaciones criminales y el Gobierno de Felipe Calderón. Día tras día, los periódicos cuentan historias espeluznantes de matanzas, decapitaciones, policías y políticos corrompidos por el narcotráfico. A ritmo de ametralladora, las editoriales publican libros sobre los principales carteles y hasta la revista Forbes sigue manteniendo en su nómina de multimillonarios al mítico Chapo Guzmán, el fugitivo líder del cartel de Sinaloa. El mal, por tanto, tiene su cuota de gloria en la vida cotidiana de México. De pie junto al quirófano del Hospital General de Ciudad Juárez, el doctor Arturo Valenzuela, de 45 años y con una hija adolescente, se fue dando cuenta de que, hace solo tres años, a su quirófano llegaban dos heridos de bala a la semana, a veces tres, tipos duros, herederos de una estirpe acostumbrada a matar y a morir según las reglas de la droga y la frontera, pero que, mes a mes, la fisonomía de los heridos y de los muertos se iba suavizando hasta tener los rasgos de una mujer joven. Empujados por la pobreza, por la desigualdad, por la falta de afecto en una ciudad acostumbrada a tratar a las mujeres como esclavas -en la cadena de montaje o en la casa-, cientos de muchachos crecidos a la intemperie de barrios sin asfalto ni escuelas, sin energía eléctrica ni agua corriente, fueron engrosando las filas del único ejército que los aceptaba. A un ritmo endiablado, sin capacidad de elegir, esos muchachos bautizados a semejanza del último galán de la última telenovela, fueron subiendo rápidamente por la escalera del crimen. De halcón -el que alerta de la llegada de la policía- a camello. De camello a sicario. De sicario a muerto. El doctor Valenzuela pensó que la única manera de intentar interrumpir ese último salto mortal pasaba por quedarse. "Me dije que mi hija o mis padres no eran los únicos que lo estaban pasando mal. Que en la biografía de mi conciencia no podía escribir con tinta indeleble que cuando mi ciudad me necesitó, yo me fui. Así que me senté con otros médicos a ver qué se podía hacer...". No hace falta escribirlo. El doctor Valenzuela decidió quedarse.

"La primera marcha que organizamos fue en noviembre de 2008. Unos 200 médicos. Muchos con cubrebocas, por temor a represalias. Ya se habían disparado los secuestros, las extorsiones telefónicas y los homicidios con armas largas, aunque no tantos como ahora. Se estaba empezando a fraguar el Comité Médico Ciudadano y yo me sumé. Lo primero que hicimos fue crear una página de Internet con información práctica para enfrentar los secuestros. ¿Cómo piensa el secuestrador? ¿Qué víctima es más vulnerable? Incluso pusimos un botón de pánico para que la gente nos llamara en caso de necesidad, porque ya por entonces nadie se fiaba de la policía. Hay que tener en cuenta que en el año 2007, en Ciudad Juárez se denunciaron siete secuestros. En 2008 ya fueron 28. Al año siguiente ya había más de 200 denuncias... La gente no sabía qué hacer. Negociaban mal. Pagaban rescates espantosos. Cometían errores que ponían en peligro a la víctima. Y lo peor de todo: una vez que pagaban, ya jamás los dejaban en paz, seguían extorsionándolos. Mucha gente empezó a marcharse de la ciudad".

El párrafo anterior, sin interrupciones, es la pura declaración del doctor Valenzuela. En ese párrafo, y en los que vendrán después, está sintetizada la historia de lo que ha sucedido en México en los últimos cinco años, la clave apenas apuntada en la primera frase del reportaje: los mexicanos no fueron a buscar la guerra, la guerra se plantó un día en la puerta de su casa. La verdadera clase de tropa de esta guerra sin cuartel -es bueno no equivocarse- no la forman los miles de militares sacados urgentemente de los cuarteles o los miles de policías federales instruidos a toda prisa, conectados a una máquina de la verdad para certificar la pureza de sus intenciones, armados hasta los dientes después y finalmente puestos a patrullar en ciudades que a muchos de ellos les resultan hostiles y remotas. Los verdaderos soldados a la fuerza de esta guerra son los ciudadanos. Los concejales de ciudades pequeñas que, pese a la oferta de plomo o plata, deciden apretar los dientes y seguir sirviendo a sus comunidades. Las profesoras que, entre la clase de matemáticas y la de dibujo, tienen que enseñar ahora la de supervivencia. En caso de balacera, hay que tirarse al suelo, no levantar la cabeza, entonar tan fuerte como sea posible una canción divertida. "No pasa nada", les decía Martha Rivera Alanís a sus alumnos de seis años mientras fuera repicaban las balas, "nada más pongan sus caritas en el piso. Vamos a cantar fuerte una canción: ¡si las gotas de lluvia fueran chocolate...!". El vídeo que grabó aquella valiente maestra de Nuevo León venía a demostrar hasta qué punto la violencia forma ya parte de la vida cotidiana de México, pero también de qué forma los mexicanos de a pie lo enfrentan de forma valerosa. "Echándole ganas", por utilizar una expresión local.

Como le echan ganas cada día los periodistas mexicanos del norte. Hasta hace muy pocos años ejercían su oficio decente y tranquilamente en los pequeños diarios de las ciudades del norte, hasta que, de un día para otro, se convirtieron en corresponsales de guerra. Solo que ellos no se visten con chalecos antibalas, no presumen de haber estado en conflictos lejanos ni dan conferencias al regreso. Ellos -los periodistas de Chihuahua, de Tamaulipas, de Nuevo León- ni siquiera tienen que cruzar la calle para irse a la guerra. Lo hacen después de dejar a sus hijos en el colegio, a veces en el mismo colegio que los hijos de los criminales, temiendo cada día que, después de cubrir la última balacera en el barrio más bravo de la ciudad, el teléfono de la redacción suene y al otro lado de la línea una voz muy convincente sugiera que al reyezuelo local del cartel del Golfo o de Los Zetas no le gustaría que tal o cual dato ocupara la portada del día siguiente. Y a pesar de todo, los periodistas mexicanos siguen ejerciendo su oficio. La prueba es que la ONU acaba de otorgarle a México el dudoso galardón de haberse convertido en "el país más peligroso de América para ejercer el periodismo", un premio al que solo se opta reuniendo muchas coronas de flores.

Hay muchos alcaldes en México que, día a día, desprecian el dinero sucio y ponen en riesgo su vida. Pero tal vez no haya muchos que sean capaces de contarlo con el desparpajo del ingeniero Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, alcalde de García, una localidad de 150.000 habitantes en el área metropolitana de Monterrey, la capital de Nuevo León.

-¿Cuántas veces han atentado contra usted?

-Tres.

-¿Cuál fue la primera?

-Cuando inicié mi campaña para alcalde, en junio de 2009.

-¿Por qué?

-Porque le dije a la gente lo que ya venía viendo desde hacía unos años, que los policías estaban involucrados en el narcotráfico, cobraban extorsiones, se dedicaban al narcomenudeo... Pero, a pesar de la amenaza de los criminales, gané la alcaldía.

-¿Y qué fue lo primero que hizo como alcalde?

-Puse al frente de la policía a un general incorruptible. Me lo mataron al cuarto día. Y yo, después de ir al funeral, eché al cuerpo de policía al completo, despedí a 165 agentes y empecé a reclutar a gente nueva. Contraté a otro militar incorruptible y empezamos a limpiar la ciudad. Clausuramos 250 narcotienditas, sacamos a los capos de la ciudad, metimos en la cárcel a 27 policías y otros salieron huyendo. Son esos los que me quieren matar. Estoy pisando muchos callos, pero no quiero que un día mis hijos digan que fui un cobarde.

-Y, ya como alcalde, ha sufrido dos atentados más...

-Se me pone la piel chinita al acordarme. Yo jamás he disparado un arma, nunca tuve una pistola. Pero nos emboscaron y tuve que poner mi camioneta blindada entre los sicarios y los escoltas para que no los fusilaran allí mismo. Ahí ya me mataron a uno...

-¿No tiene usted miedo, alcalde?

-Todos tenemos miedo, compadre. Pero yo lo sé controlar. Mire, hay gente que le tiene tanto miedo a la muerte que no aprende a disfrutar de la vida. Hay vivos que están ya muertos. Y yo no quiero ni ser un muerto en vida ni que mis hijos me recuerden como un cobarde.

En las dos historias siguientes también adquieren especial importancia los hijos. Los hijos pequeños de María Santos Gorrostieta y de Marisol Valles. Los hijos muertos de Marisela Escobedo, de Luz María Dávila y de Javier Sicilia.

María Santos Gorrostieta, la joven alcaldesa del pequeño municipio de Tiquicheo, en el Estado de Michoacán, apenas ocupó un par de días los titulares de la prensa. Dijo lo que tenía que decir y luego, sensatamente, volvió a desaparecer. Y lo que tenía que decir era que el 15 de octubre de 2009 sufrió el primer ataque del crimen organizado. ¿De quién exactamente? No se sabe. Estas cosas no suelen saberse en México, donde la impunidad supera el 98% de los casos. Aquel día, la joven alcaldesa fue atacada por un grupo de sicarios armados con rifles de asalto y granadas de fragmentación -esos juguetes que con tanta facilidad se pueden comprar en las 12.000 armerías estadounidenses abiertas junto a los 3.000 kilómetros de frontera con México-.

No lograron matarla, pero se llevaron por delante a su marido y padre de sus tres hijos pequeños. En cuanto se recuperó de sus heridas, María Santos regresó a sus labores de alcaldesa, pero solo tres meses después volvieron a atacarla. Esta vez, cuando salía de un acto en la Tierra Caliente del Estado de Guerrero. La camioneta Ford Lobo que conducía su hermano recibió varias ráfagas de metralleta. Tres proyectiles hicieron blanco en el tórax, la pierna y el abdomen de María Santos. De nuevo estuvo a punto de morir. De nuevo se salvó. Y fue entonces cuando la joven alcaldesa llamó a un fotógrafo, se remangó la blusa, mostró su hermoso cuerpo roto por los disparos y dijo: "A pesar de mi propia seguridad y la de mi familia, tengo una responsabilidad con mi pueblo, con los niños, las mujeres, los ancianos y los hombres que se parten el alma todos los días sin descanso para procurarse un pedazo de pan...; no es posible que yo claudique cuando tengo tres hijos a los que tengo que educar con el ejemplo". Dicho esto, María Santos Gorrostieta, la alcaldesa valiente de Tiquicheo, regresó de puntillas a sus labores de madre y alcaldesa.

María Santos sabía que no es prudente significarse demasiado. En ninguna dictadura lo es. Tampoco en esta del terror creciente que sufre México desde principios del año 2007. Tan creciente que un reciente estudio realizado por el experto Eduardo Guerrero para la revista Nexos demuestra que -en contra de la versión oficial- cada vez son más los municipios mexicanos azotados por la violencia. Si en 2007 eran 53 los municipios donde se registraron 12 o más homicidios ligados al crimen organizado, en 2008 ya pasaron a ser 84; en 2009 la cifra subió a 131 municipios y en 2010 ya fueron 200 las localidades con 12 o más ejecuciones. La cifra de lugares aquejados por el cáncer de la violencia se ha cuadruplicado en solo cuatro años y aún no se vislumbra una salida.

Por eso, significarse es peligroso. Muchos de los protagonistas de nuestro México heroico lo supieron desde el principio. Otros lo fueron sabiendo. Del primer grupo mencionado podemos rescatar la lucha de una mujer llamada Marisela Escobedo.

Marisela tenía una hija de 16 años que se llamaba Rubí. La mataron en Ciudad Juárez en agosto de 2008, apenas unas semanas después de dar a luz a su bebé. Marisela, como otras muchas de las más de 500 madres cuyas hijas han sido asesinadas en la ciudad norteña, emprendió la búsqueda del asesino de su hija. Un año después, y gracias a su insistencia, la policía detuvo a un tal Sergio Rafael Barraza, el exnovio de Rubí, quien confesó que la había matado y quemado después, indicando a los agentes el lugar donde se encontraba el cadáver. Pese a todo, el convicto solo pasó unos meses en prisión. El 29 de abril de 2010 fue puesto en libertad por "falta de pruebas". Marisela volvió a echarse a la calle para seguir clamando justicia para su hija. Logró que el juicio fuera revisado, pero el asesino, lógicamente, ya había puesto pies en polvorosa. Barraza fue condenado en rebeldía a 50 años de prisión. Marisela se plantó entonces frente al Palacio de Gobierno de Chihuahua, el Estado fronterizo con Estados Unidos cuya ciudad más poblada y más violenta es Ciudad Juárez. La presencia de Marisela allí, durmiendo en plena calle, era un grito constante que dejaba al descubierto las graves carencias del sistema de seguridad y justicia en México. No pasó mucho tiempo hasta que empezó a recibir amenazas. Las denunció frente a las cámaras de televisión. "No me voy a esconder", dijo, "si me van a asesinar, tendrán que venir a asesinar aquí para vergüenza del Gobierno. Tengo amenazas por parte del asesino de mi hija, de su familia. Me han dicho que él ya está involucrado en un grupo del crimen organizado. ¿Qué está esperando el Gobierno? ¿Que venga y termine conmigo? Pues que termine conmigo, pero aquí enfrente del Palacio de Gobierno, a ver si les da vergüenza".

Así lo hicieron. Terminaron con ella allí mismo, en plena calle, frente al edificio símbolo de la autoridad, el jueves 16 de diciembre de 2010. El vídeo grabado por una cámara de seguridad hizo posible que todo México pudiera ver casi en directo la ejecución anunciada de Marisela Escobedo. Tres tipos la atacaron, ella cruzó la calle intentando salvarse, pero un sicario la alcanzó, le disparó mortalmente en la cabeza y se alejó caminando, tan campante, hasta que un coche blanco lo recogió y lo sacó del lugar.

Marisela -que hoy reposa junto a los restos de su hija Rubí- sabía que la iban a matar. Y aun así dio el paso. Marisol Valles, en cambio, no se percató en un principio de lo que significa enfrentarse al crimen. El pasado mes de octubre, ante la negativa de todos los hombres, decidió hacerse cargo de la policía de su municipio, Práxedis G. Guerrero, fronterizo con Estados Unidos, en pleno Valle de Juárez. Ante la estupefacción de medio mundo, Marisol Valles, de 20 años de edad, madre de una recién nacida y estudiante de Criminología, se convirtió en la jefa de 19 policías, nueve de ellos mujeres. Los antecedentes no eran halagüeños precisamente. Solo un par de días antes, en el pueblo de al lado, el crimen había abatido sin contemplaciones a un comisario y a su hijo. ¿Quién los mato? Posiblemente los mismos que, unas semanas después y sin que trascendiera a la opinión pública, empezaron a mandarle mensajes envenenados a Marisol Valles. Tal vez fueron los hombres de Vicente Carrillo, jefe del cartel de Juárez, o tal vez los del Chapo Guzmán, jefe del cartel de Sinaloa. Lo que sí trascendió es que, cuatro meses después y sin decírselo ni al alcalde, la joven jefa de policía cogió a su hijo y cruzó la frontera para ponerse a salvo. No ha sido hasta ahora cuando, a través de una cadena de televisión estadounidense, Marisol Valles ha declarado con lágrimas en los ojos que sí, que tuvo miedo, que la amenazaron con asesinarla a ella, a su bebé, a su familia...

Mientras todo eso sucedía, muy cerca de allí, junto a un quirófano del Hospital General de Ciudad Juárez, el doctor Valenzuela seguía observando la progresiva destrucción de su ciudad, pero no solo de la suya. Como piezas de dominó que provocan con su caída la caída de las demás, muchas ciudades del norte del país se fueron convirtiendo en verdaderos campos de batalla -Tijuana, Reynosa, Matamoros- hasta terminar contagiando al seis doble, la joya de la corona, Monterrey, la capital del Estado de Nuevo León, otrora el orgullo indiscutible del México moderno y emprendedor y hoy una ciudad que vive de sobresalto en sobresalto. Sus vecinos se han acostumbrado a avisarse a través de las redes sociales -sobre todo a través de Twitter- de los bloqueos de carreteras que los sicarios de tal o cual cartel suelen organizar para evitar que los rivales o la autoridad los interrumpan mientras hacen de las suyas. Por ejemplo, el pasado martes, un vecino de Monterrey avisaba a través de su tuiter: "Situación de riesgo en Chapultepec y Revolución, hombres colgados en puente y disparos, eviten la zona #MtyFollow". El tuit informativo era contestado enseguida por TrackMty, una red ciudadana con más de 40.000 ciudadanos que intenta ayudar a los ciudadanos a no convertirse en víctimas de la violencia. Unas horas después, los periódicos locales ya traían la fotografía de los ahorcados en un puente del centro de Monterrey, a plena luz del día. La conmoción que viven ahora los regiomontanos ante la caída de su ciudad la vivieron ya hace tiempo los juarenses. También fueron testigos de cómo los intentos de rescatar la ciudad con la bayoneta calada fueron fracasando.

Lo cuenta el doctor Valenzuela: "Fue entonces cuando llegaron los militares a Juárez. Capturaron a muchos delincuentes. Pero no supieron armar los expedientes y los jueces los dejaban en libertad. La impunidad estaba por arriba del 98%. Ya teníamos una buena cantidad de homicidios todos los días, los secuestros se dispararon y se había puesto de moda el cobro de piso. A tu negocio llegaba un tipo, a cara descubierta, y te entregaba un papel con un número de teléfono: a partir de mañana recibirás protección a cambio de 5.000 pesos (300 euros) a la semana. Y si no pagabas... Empezaron a cerrarse gran cantidad de negocios y los homicidios ya superaban los 5.000. Ninguno se investigaba. La policía estaba infiltrada. La procuración de justicia no existía. Pedimos que viniera a la ciudad el presidente Felipe Calderón. Se nos dijo que el presidente iba a venir... Pero entonces pasó lo de Villas de Salvárcar y eso lo aceleró todo...".

Lo de Villas de Salvárcar... Hay un antes y un después de "lo de Villas de Salvárcar". Ocurrió el 31 de enero de 2010. Quince jóvenes que celebraban una fiesta en un barrio de Ciudad Juárez fueron acribillados. Desgraciadamente, no fue la crueldad del crimen lo que lo convirtió en famoso, sino unas declaraciones que hizo el presidente Felipe Calderón. Sin salirse de la versión oficial, que sostiene que la inmensa mayoría de los caídos desde 2007 son sicarios que se matan entre sí, el presidente de la República atribuyó la matanza a un ajuste de cuentas entre bandas. El patinazo no pudo ser mayor. Enseguida se supo que los muchachos eran en su mayoría buenos estudiantes y deportistas, víctimas de la espiral de locura y muerte que azota a Ciudad Juárez, donde en 2010, y a pesar del despliegue de más de 10.000 policías federales, se produjeron 3.100 homicidios. El presidente Calderón no tuvo más remedio que ir ocho días después a Juárez y disculparse ante los familiares de los muchachos. Una de las madres, Luz María Dávila, rota por el dolor, lo encaró: "Disculpe, señor presidente, yo no le puedo decir bienvenido porque para mí no lo es. Yo quiero justicia. Mis hijos eran dos muchachitos que estaba en una fiesta. Y quiero que usted se retracte de lo que dijo. Dijo que eran pandilleros. Mentira. Mis dos hijos estudiaban y trabajaban. No tenían tiempo de andar en la calle. Eran mis dos únicos hijos y ya no los tengo. Ahora quiero justicia. Ustedes siempre hablan y no hacen nada. Quiero que se ponga en mi lugar y sienta lo que ahorita estoy sintiendo yo. No me diga que sí, ¡haga algo, señor presidente!".

Aquella súplica sigue pendiente. La situación del país va de mal en peor. La cifra de asesinatos, de secuestros, de asaltos, de robos... va en aumento. Durante los últimos meses han sido cientos los cadáveres encontrados en fosas clandestinas. Hay zonas, como Tamaulipas, donde el Estado no es capaz de garantizar la seguridad ni en la carretera principal, la 101, la que une la capital del Estado, Ciudad Victoria, con la fronteriza Heroica Matamoros. Hace unas semanas se supo que una madrugada sí y otra también, grupos de sicarios a bordo de lujosas camionetas y manejando fusiles de alto poder se sitúan al borde de la carretera, dan el alto a los autobuses de línea, suben a ellos, eligen a punta de pistola a unas cuantas mujeres y a unos cuantos hombres y los bajan. A ellas las violan allí mismo y a ellos se los llevan para intentar extorsionar a sus familias. Luego los entierran en fosas clandestinas. ¿Cuántos? No se sabe. ¿Quiénes? Tampoco. ¿Por qué? Menos. Estas tres preguntas con sus respuestas -o la falta de ellas- se pueden aplicar a la guerra que vive México. Más de 40.000 muertos, 9.000 sin identificar, 5.000 desaparecidos...

Y justo ahora, cuando todas las veredas parecían conducir inexorablemente al precipicio, un rumor ha empezado a escucharse en la calle. A ratos sordo como un lamento. A veces indignado. Ante la incapacidad del Gobierno de detener la sangría constante -y también de abrazar a las víctimas de la barbarie-, un hombre de pelo cano, sombrero de paja y dos relojes en la mano izquierda, se ha puesto en camino. Se llama Javier Sicilia. Es poeta. Como la mayoría de los mexicanos, observaba con horror la deriva de su país. Pero también como la mayoría, permanecía quieto. El pasado 28 de marzo, su hijo Juan Francisco, de 24 años, fue asesinado en Cuernavaca junto a otros cuatro jóvenes y dos adultos. Sicilia, que se encontraba en Filipinas, regresó a México, anunció que jamás volvería a escribir poesía, puso junto a su reloj el de su hijo y se echó a la calle para intentar recuperar la conciencia cívica, enfrentarse al miedo, reclamar justicia.

-¿Por qué, en vez de encerrarse en su dolor, ha salido a la calle a decir basta?

-Por dignidad. Y por mi hijo. Porque su desgracia le está poniendo cara y nombre a la de 40.000 desconocidos. Y, sobre todo, porque tengo que hacer todo lo posible para que no muera ni un muchacho más.

A través del poeta Sicilia, de Marisela Escobedo o de Luz María Dávila, los mexicanos se han ido enterando de que la versión oficial no es del todo cierta. Que muchos de los 40.000 muertos tal vez sí fueran sicarios, pero que otros muchos no pudieron evitar su mala fortuna.

Un día, sin avisar, la guerra vino a buscarlos.

La sociedad civil quiere reformas y busca culpables

Hasta ahora, la sociedad civil había estado callada a pesar de la situación de extrema violencia que vive México. Sin embargo, una caravana encabezada por el poeta Javier Sicilia ha recorrido la mitad norte del país -desde Cuernavaca hasta Ciudad Juárez- para hacer visible el sufrimiento de las víctimas. Al llegar a su destino, se hizo público un pacto ciudadano por la paz. Estos son los principales puntos.

» 1. Exigimos esclarecer asesinatos y desapariciones y nombrar a las víctimas.

Se deben esclarecer y resolver los asesinatos, las desapariciones, los secuestros, las fosas clandestinas, la trata de personas y el conjunto de delitos que han agraviado a la sociedad. Determinar la identidad de todas las víctimas de homicidio es un requisito indispensable para generar confianza.

Exigimos a las autoridades estatales y federal la resolución pública que presente a los autores intelectuales y materiales de algunos de los casos emblemáticos que han agraviado a la sociedad, entre ellos la familia Reyes, Marisela Escobedo y su hija Rubí, las niñas y niños de la guardería ABC, la familia Le Barón, los jóvenes de Villas de Salvárcar, los jóvenes de Morelos.

Convocamos a la sociedad civil a rescatar la memoria de las víctimas de la violencia, a no olvidar y exigir justicia colocando en cada plaza o espacio público placas con los nombres de las víctimas.

» 2. Exigimos poner fin a la estrategia de guerra y asumir un enfoque de seguridad ciudadana. Se debe cambiar el enfoque militarista y la estrategia de guerra de la seguridad pública y asumir una nueva estrategia de seguridad ciudadana con enfoque en los derechos humanos.

» 3. Exigimos combatir la corrupción y la impunidad.

Se requiere una amplia reforma en la procuración y administración de justicia que dote de verdadera autonomía al Ministerio Público y al Poder Judicial que establezca el control ciudadano sobre las policías y los cuerpos de seguridad, avance en la reforma de los juicios orales y establezca sistemas más efectivos de control judicial que reduzcan la discrecionalidad en los procedimientos y resoluciones de fondo.

» 4. Exigimos combatir la raíz económica y las ganancias del crimen.

La criminalidad y su violencia tienen como su motor las ganancias derivadas del narcotráfico, los secuestros, la trata de personas, la extorsión, la venta de protección y demás delitos que después reinyectan los recursos en la economía mediante el lavado de dinero. Exigimos un combate frontal al lavado de dinero y activos de los delincuentes.

» 5. Exigimos la atención de emergencia a la juventud y acciones efectivas de recuperación del tejido social.

Exigimos una política económica y social que genere oportunidades reales de educación, salud, cultura y empleo para jóvenes porque son las y los principales víctimas de esta estrategia.

» 6. Exigimos democracia participativa.

Mejor democracia representativa y democratización en los medios de comunicación.

Algú s'havia esforçat a defensar aquests dies que a Barcelona només s'hi jugava un partit de rugbi internacional. És mentida. El que ahir es va veure al Lluís Companys, més enllà del resultat i de la classificació de la USAP per a les semifinals de la Copa d'Europa, transcendeix l'àmbit esportiu i penetra en un sentiment nacional que ja és transfronterer, el catalanisme. Fins i tot als mateixos jugadors de l'equip de Perpinyà els va costar abstreure's d'un ambient i d'un esdeveniment comparable, salvant les distàncies, a aquell viatge en massa d'aficionats del Barça a la final de la Recopa de Basilea del 1979. La invasió pacífica des del Rosselló de més de 30.000 aficionats només podia acabar d'una manera, amb una festa absoluta, un partit memorable i una victòria incontestable contra un dels grans equips europeus, el Toló.

Els primers minuts del partit només es poden contextualitzar dins l'escenari en què ens trobàvem. Els jugadors de la USAP els costava connectar qualsevol jugada. Però els errors, que n'hi havia, els van contestar des de la graderia amb ovacions eixordadores dels aficionats, que no només ho perdonaven tot sinó que volien esdevenir un altre jugador. I, en certa manera, ho van fer. A la primera part, l'equip català va perdre Vilaceca i el camerunès Tchale Watchou per exclusions de deu minuts. Van jugar més de la meitat del temps amb un jugador més contra un equip liderat per un gat vell com Wilkinson. La USAP va resistir i només un imperdonable error de Laharrague en l'última acció va permetre que el Toló se n'anés al descans amb una diferència immerescuda (6-11).

La segona part va ser una altra cosa, i quina cosa! El xou de les grades es va traslladar directament a la gespa i el partit va embogir. La USAP va entendre que no podia deixar escapar una ocasió com aquella per donar un bon cop de puny taula del rugbi europeu i demostrar a tothom de quin pasta està fet aquest equip. Sense individualitats notables, els catalans es van abalançar sobre els occitans percudint en totes les fases del joc i combinant ferotgement el joc a les mans amb la incursió dels davanters, amb el samoà Tuilagi exercint d'obrellaunes. D'aquesta manera, i amb una execució brillant, va arribar la marca de Plante, l'ala esquerra, que va culminar una jugada perfecta a la mà. L'estadi estava en plena ebullició i les cares dels jugadors sobre el camp reflectien el moment històric que estaven protagonitzant. El Toló encara va tenir un últim cop de geni quan el sud-africà Van Nierkek va triturar totes les línies dels catalans per fer el 16-16, arrodonit per Wilkinson (16-18). Però l'equip de Perpinyà no es va immutar. Amb l'entrada de Melé, Hume i Michel, va mantenir la seva pressió en el terreny de joc del Toló, que només es podia treure de sobre la pilota amb puntades de Wilkinson. Freshwater –rebatejat com «aire fresc» des de la megafonia en el moment d'accedir al terreny de joc– va acabar decidint el partit amb una marca de ràbia i força. A partir de llavors, el partit va desaparèixer de l'escenari. La gent va començar a botar, a fer l'onada i a celebrar amb tanta intensitat qualsevol placatge d'una manera tan salvatge com qualsevol gol del Camp Nou. La comunió entre tots plegats va acabar amb tota una cerimònia, els jugadors del club donant la volta a l'estadi.

La consulta sobre la independència va rebre ahir a Barcelona més suports que el partit més votat en les últimes eleccions municipals. I si em permeteu un vaticini gens aventurat, probablement han recol·lectat també més sufragis que els que obtindrà la formació guanyadora de les municipals del mes vinent, sigui quina sigui. Pot ser que algun patriota benintencionat afirmi que la participació de més d'un quart de milió de ciutadans va convertir la diada d'ahir en una festa de la democràcia. De festa, cap. Més de 250.000 persones aixecant el cul de la cadira de la desafecció per implicar-se en un exercici sense valor legal no s'hi posen pas per fer una festa sinó per donar un cop de puny a la taula de la Barcelona oficial i els seus corifeus desorientats.

Barcelona porta més de trenta anys dedicant-se, principalment, a ser capital d'ella mateixa. L'aposta no es pot pas dir que hagi estat un fracàs. La ciutat s'ha situat en el mapamundi i té un cert prestigi com a destinació turística i atracció cultural. Malgrat tot, les autoritats que la menen no veuen més enllà del nas d'una gran urbs que, potser sí que vol continuar sent gran, però que no aspira a ser més que ciutat.

En canvi, un parell de centenars de milers llargs de conveïns ahir van decidir que Barcelona ha de sortir d'ella mateixa per recuperar el paper que durant tants anys ha tingut en la història: liderar un país. No cal inventar-se jocs, ni fòrums, ni fastos similars. Quin somni millor hi pot haver per a una ciutat orgullosa i cosmopolita, quin revulsiu més estimulant, que el d'esdevenir la capital d'un estat. Ahir, a Barcelona, va començar a ser demà.

Revolutions: What went wrong in the west?

The lack of an Islamic takeover in Libya, Tunisia and Egypt has forced scholars and academics to rework their theories and acknowledge their deep-seated stereotypes on which they found their analyses [GETTY]

Many have been watching the revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya with astonishment, not just because they seem to be coming out of the blue, but also because they have been amazingly civil, peaceful, unpretentious, and transformative.

There are still several other revolutions now in the making – the closest one to the finish line seems to be the Libyan uprising.

The credit, of course, goes to the people of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and to whoever might ultimately follow; who knows who will be the next?

If we would like to define this moment and describe the stage at which the revolutions stand, there is nothing better than the proverb attributed to the Prophet Muhammad, as preserved in the traditional pious Muslim consciousness: the time for the greater struggle of building self has come.

Having succeeded in the lesser struggle of overthrowing the dictators, the revolutionaries face now the difficult task of keeping the momentum alive after reaching the peak.

It is easy to forget the reasons why these revolutions happened in the first place. It is ultimately up to the people of the region to decide the future direction of this transformation, but one must not forget that winning a battle does not guarantee winning final victory in the overall struggle.

C'est la vie

As we have seen since the French rose up against King Louis XVI in 1789, revolutions can go disappointingly awry.

Rest assured, as we speak there are many working behind the scenes just to reach that goal. One needs not be an expert to guess that horse-trading among domestic and international actors is well underway in Tunisia, Egypt, and now Libya.

The choice for the revolutionaries, their allies, and supporters is clear but fraught with peril: the revolutionary forces can change everything only to find that everything stays the same, like what eventually happened in Iran after the revolution of 1979, or they can start a Promethean struggle for the betterment of their societies piece by piece as part of a struggle for freedom, peace, social justice, and dignity, hand-in-hand with Les damnés de la terre.

Analysts in North America and Europe did not expect revolutions in the region, and those who did, did not expect them to come from these seemingly irrelevant and unlikely actors and to be this widespread and peaceful.

This blanket statement covers both the longstanding members of the media and academia. My question is simple: Why?

Why were the antennas of the media and academia unable to perceive that an earthquake of this magnitude was coming?

It is not that they were innocent of predicting things. Was it because social media had not been tested as a means for revolution and the pundits and analysts were not yet prepared to assess the impact of social media?

This was not the case. For everyone knows that a large part of the success of Obama's election campaign was due to its effective use of internet media to mobilise the Democratic base and the independents.

So, one cannot explain away the failure of being caught off guard via inexperience in social media's transformative power.

Furthermore, let's not jump to the conclusion about social media as the reason for or the facilitator of the revolutions.

Anti-social

The role of social media in the revolutions seems to be inflated more than it can bear.

Let's not forget that there was the Tahrir Square as a physical public space where people gathered and demonstrated.

True that social media facilitated the dissemination of information faster and better and therefore succeeded in bringing people together to organise collective action. As a facilitator it did a superb job.

However, still it did not have the means to inspire, give sense of how wide spread the uprisings were, and articulate and validate whether the protests were going to bring any result. This Al Jazeera did.

The role of social media in Tunisian and, especially, Egyptian uprisings was important, but as the Libyan uprising shows clearly, the role of Al Jazeera has been central and critical.

As a news outlet, Al Jazeera had already become the voice of the disaffected even before they protested. During the revolutions, it sympathised with the people, reported events from their perspectives, inspired them to seek better lives, encouraged them to push forward, and made them feel they had agency and power.

So hiding behind the sudden rise and novelty of social media to explain the failure to see this tectonic change is not convincing.

One needs to recognise where media and academia had preferred to focus their attention as a contributor to this failure.

The bogeymen of 9/11

Let's be honest. The spirit of the time marked by 9/11 revolved around the bogeymen of "Islamic fundamentalism" and "Osama bin Laden".

Knowledge production in Europe and North America has developed primarily in the context post-9/11 propaganda tsunami created by the Islamophobic ranting of far-right extremists, whose opinions no longer even merit a serious response.

So, many sensible analysts found it expedient to combat the anti-Muslim/Arab propaganda with debunking propaganda's arguments.

They all shuffled from class to class, campus to campus, temple to temple, and NGO to NGO to explain Islam and Muslims.

Yet, even in the back of the most-respected pundits' and academics' heads the fear was that these bogeymen might have been much more real and widespread in the "Muslim world" than they were willing to admit

This goes for those who strove to forge a common ground between Muslims, Arabs and the West in a spirit of objectivity, empathy, sympathy, experience, and scholarly honesty, and sought to strengthen the cross-cultural dialogue and understanding by debriefing the European and North American audiences after generations of misinformation.

Despite their best intentions, they all ended up being wrong about a lot of things in the process.

Even the progressive journalist Robert Fisk's initial reaction to the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings was disappointingly paradigmatic.

Let's dialogue, Muslim. I want to understand you!

As far as I can see, the recent scholarly and learned discourse on Middle Eastern societies has been shaped by two sympathetic narratives intended to inform the public and battle the far right-wingers' bigotry.

The first narrative had to do with the observed. The explanation went that Islam was not an inherently violent religion; fundamentalism and terrorism were marginal historically, demographically, intellectually, and politically.

The majority of Muslims belonged to more peaceful Muslim movements and currents of thought and despised bin Laden's type of extremism.

The second was about the observer and went along these lines: The "Westerners" ought to develop and nourish cultural and religious dialogue and understanding so that we overcome the temptation to think that all people were like "us".

Muslims had the right to be different and think differently. Secularism might not be a universally applicable experience, certainly not in Muslim societies.

So the lesson was that the "Westerners" had to learn, understand, and accept Muslims and Arabs as they are without imposing their "Western" categories on them.

Amen.

But somewhere in all of this there was a fatal flaw: the good-hearted, progressive, pro-peace activists, pundits, and academics still followed the trend du jour analyses firmly within the framework of "Muslim religiosity" and "cultural understanding".

They affirmed rather than denied the basic premise of the conventional wisdom that when it came to Muslims and Arabs, all was about "religion".

Was it because the ubiquitous and perhaps unconscious thinking that Muslims and Arabs were different? I do not know.

But the fact is that almost no one had envisioned any real alternative to those dictators except the various shades of "fundamentalism" and the nebulous category of "Islamist movements".

Mubarak and Gaddafi's overworked canards about "fundamentalism" was not simply their own, it was also that of much of our political leadership, media pundits, and scholars – wittingly or unwittingly.

Therefore, the discourse about Islam as a construct in the progressive media and academia was, by and large, similar to Marie Antoinette's oft-quoted but always mis-attributed, "qu'ils mangent de la brioche".

Good-hearted true, but it showed no understanding and solved no problems.

Inconvenient facts and the failure of the paradigm

Fortunately, a beautiful theory is being spoiled by an inconvenient fact.

The revolutions are forcing all of us to confront the nature of our own thinking. Pundits and many academics found that they had not only miscalculated the real dynamics of these societies, but also knowingly (or more disturbing, unknowingly) indulged deep-seated stereotypes as foundations for analyses, which come across as shameful reminders of the caricature we describe as "Muslim" or "Arab" society.

The inconvenient, but certainly long due and welcome, truth is that the uprisings made us see that labour organisations, students, women, professional groups, in a word the civil society, provided the shock troops for the revolutions.

Looking back at the history of the last century or so, it is hard to imagine how we missed to see these dynamic groups, which have been an integral part of political reforms in the region since the late nineteenth century. They suddenly fell below our radars in the post 9/11 world.

The fact that various components of the civil society staged the revolutions has been a matter of grief for some. Had "Islamic fundamentalism", as a scholarly as well as media construct, played a major role in these revolutions, they would have affirmed the forecast, fit the existing paradigm, and therefore validated the traditional analyses.

However, the paradigm utterly failed. Even the Islamist movements jumped on the band wagon of the popular uprisings (and belatedly at that) and came across as willing to negotiate with the other actors and embrace a pluralistic society.

In addition, the revolutions are deflating the ultimately hollow concepts of "religious dialogue" and "cultural understanding" as a framework for understanding "Muslims" and "Arabs" with the same speed that a needle would deflate a balloon.

That is a good thing – both concepts helped only highlight and emphasise Arab and Muslim exceptionalism.

They promoted mediocre and irrelevant groups with essentialist views of "Islam" and "Muslims" as partners in such undertakings at the expense of engaging more relevant actors in Middle Eastern societies.

In a sense, this has been a project to create a prophecy that would ultimately fulfil itself and affirm our pre-conceived ideas about "Muslims".

Thanks to the revolutions, we now have been forced to rethink whether the categories "Muslim" and "Arab" have any meaning at all.

It is time to approach three hundred million Arabic speaking people and more than one billion people professing Islam as their faith in their own ways not as "Muslims" but as an integral part of human society – within the context of particular social experiences, needs, aspirations, worries, and grievances, which are as real, complex, and the same as that of the most other peoples around the world.

It might indeed prove disorienting for the media and academia to see Muslims as individuals from various walks of life (women, students, workers, and professionals) and as members of diverse and competing social classes, who can raise their voices demanding jobs, better wages, freedom, participation, and independence.

But those who still prefer to see nothing other than chants of religious slogans may do so on their own peril as the events of the recent revolutions are changing the way we see the region once and for all.

It is called ezber bozmak in Turkish – breaking the routine. Indeed, revolutions are teaching us a lesson, or so one would hope.

Scholars Sing the Praises of Eurovision

Kitschy Song Contest Wows Academia; 'Rampant Snobbism'

Scholars increasingly see Waterloo as a pivotal event for Europe. The song, that is, not the battle.

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the biggest televised events in the world. So what if it's lowbrow? Each year, countries from across Europe select musical acts to represent them and battle it out on live TV. WSJ's Dan Michaels reports.

ABBA's breakout hit grabbed global attention when the Swedish quartet won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974. The televised competition has also given the world Olivia Newton-John, Julio Iglesias, Céline Dion and the song "Volare."

Each May, about 40 countries from Iceland to Azerbaijan select bands to represent them in the battle, which first aired in 1956. More than 125 million people now watch it live and can vote by phone for their favorite act.

Tastemakers cringe. The contest is routinely savaged as being everything from a lowbrow hash of unoriginal pop to total camp. The winner in 1998 was an Israeli transsexual named Dana International with a song called "Diva." In 2006 the contest was won by Lordi, a Finnish heavy-metal band whose members dress as monsters, singing "Hard Rock Hallelujah." Ireland's 2008 entry was a sock-puppet turkey.

But 125 million Eurovision fans can't be wrong, argue a new band of academics. Instead of focusing on musical merits, they examine issues like "the concept of European community"; victories for "culturally peripheral nations"; and a "pan-European identity" fostered by the contest's ban on voting for one's own country.

"It could be destabilizing to some people that the idea of European culture is satin pantsuits and guys dressed up as monster rockers and screaming fans," says Karen Fricker, a lecturer on drama at the University of London and a prominent Eurovision researcher.

One skeptic is Terry Wogan, who hosted Eurovision programs in Britain over a period of 37 years. "It's a song contest," he told members of the European Broadcasting Union, which organizes the event, in 2009. It's "not about asserting your place in the [European] Community."

Officials at the EBU, an association of national broadcasters, are flattered by the spotlight. "We were surprised to find there was such a large group of people working on scientific research about the Eurovision Song Contest," says EBU spokesman Sietse Bakker.

Lordi

Over recent years, dozens of scholars as far afield as Georgetown University and New York University's Abu Dhabi campus have begun analyzing Eurovision. They hold symposia and write in academic publications ranging from the European Journal of Political Economy to the Journal of Queer Studies in Finland.

To link these Eurovisionaries, Ms. Fricker, an American, and Milija Gluhovic, a professor of theater at Britain's University of Warwick, in 2009 set up the Eurovision Research Network. Its website lists nearly 90 members.

During last year's Eurovision contest in Norway, the group conducted a daylong seminar at the University of Oslo titled "Setting the Agenda for Eurovision Studies."

One presentation was "National Differences at the Eurovision Song Contest: The Seven Essential & Interconnected 'Dimensions of Meaning.'" Another offered case studies of entries from former East Bloc countries, where the contest is widely considered a sign of integration with Western Europe.

Prof. Gluhovic and Ms. Fricker in July were granted funding of more than $50,000 by the British government for a series of conferences this year, under the theme "Eurovision and the 'New' Europe."

The first workshop, "European Margins and Multiple Modernities," was held Feb. 18 near London. It examined "the binary of barbarian East/civilized West in current European public life," a blurb said.

The second workshop, dubbed "Queering Europe," will focus on gender issues and links between Eurovision and the gay community, in which the contest is extremely popular.

Eurovision was conceived in 1955 as a way to link old rivals using new technology. EBU representatives from 23 Western European countries meeting in Monaco agreed to televise a live international talent show—an ambitious goal at the time. The first contest, staged in Lugano, Switzerland, drew entrants from just seven nations.

Dutch musicologist and cultural historian Lutgard Mutsaers watched it as a three-year-old and says she has seen every Eurovision since. But as a lecturer on popular music at Utrecht University in the 1990s, she kept silent about her fascination. "It would have been professional death to say I was interested in it," Ms. Mutsaers says. "Snobbism is rampant in Continental European music studies."

One of the first pieces of academic work on Eurovision was Swedish musicology professor Alf Björnberg's doctoral thesis from 1987, which analyzed his country's song selection. Despite Sweden's liberal culture, "It was regarded as rather a curious and lowbrow thing to do," he recalls. After he had done some further research, his work on the subject languished for nearly 15 years.

A decade ago, two American academics revived the field. Ivan Raykoff, an assistant professor of the arts at the New School in New York, and Robert Tobin, now a professor of foreign languages and cultures at Clark University, in Worcester, Mass., were both intrigued by Dana International's victory. Although Eurovision has never been broadcast in the U.S., the two wrote papers on it and discussed it at international conferences. Marking the contest's 50th anniversary, they posted a call for academic research on the Internet.

"We got a flood of papers," recalls Prof. Raykoff. The resulting volume, "A Song for Europe," published in 2007, is billed as "the first interdisciplinary academic study" of Eurovision.

Contributors included Ms. Mutsaers, who wrote about how the Dutch broke racial barriers with Eurovision's first nonwhite entrant in 1964, and Prof. Björnberg, on performers opting to assert their ethnicities and shun Europop. Few submissions came from Western European countries, where Eurovision began and is now scorned by intellectuals. Only one French scholar offered a paper, "and I didn't really understand what he was saying," recalls Prof. Raykoff.

Many pitches came from academics raised in the Soviet Bloc. Prof. Tobin calls the contest "a barometer of the boundaries of Europe" because it's more inclusive than the EU or NATO. "Even people in Belarus can say they're part of something European," he says.

Despite researchers' intense analysis, most say they still appreciate the spectacle's campiness. "You have to have a good sense of humor and admit there is a level at which it's funny," says Prof. Tobin.

No es en propiedad una guerra pero es justa. La acción militar decidida hoy en París a partir de la resolución 1973 del Consejo de Seguridad cumple con todas las condiciones exigidas para la guerra justa o llamada también ‘ius ad bellum’ (derecho a hacer la guerra). Es justa la causa: se trata de proteger a la población libia y de impedir que Gadafi termine aplastando a sangre y fuego la revuelta contra su dictadura. Hay una autoridad legítima que la ha autorizado, la más legítima de todas las que tenemos a nuestra disposición: el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas. La intención o el objetivo que se persigue es el correcto, y viene incluido ya en la causa. También lo es la proporcionalidad de los medios de acción, hasta el punto de que no se desencadena en propiedad una guerra sino una acción de policía o protección aérea. Es el último recurso, puesto que Gadafi ha sido ya conminado a un alto el fuego y a retirar sus tropas a los cuarteles, mientras que el dictador y sus hijos no solo no han cumplido ninguna de las condiciones exigidas, sino que además han intentado engañar a la comunidad internacional declarando un alto el fuego que en ningún momento han aplicado. Finalmente, tiene el propósito obvio de alcanzar la paz y abrir el camino a la plena soberanía de los libios para que se doten del Gobierno que consideren conveniente.

Siendo una acción militar de gran complejidad y amplitud, no es una guerra, cuestión que merece algo más de explicación. Tiene límites: en sus objetivos y en los instrumentos de acción, y en una guerra, en cambio, no hay límites. En sus objetivos: sirve para proteger a la población civil. En sus medios: sólo tiene autorización para impedir el sobrevuelo de la aviación de Gadafi y para impedir el ataque también terrestre contra la población civil, pero no puede poner tropas terrestres sobre territorio libio. Estamos así ante una vasta acción de policía internacional, enérgica y dura, para la protección de la población de un país que se halla en una situación de máxima vulnerabilidad, porque está siendo atacada desde el propio poder en plaza. Los ciudadanos de este país son quienes deben derrocar y sustituir al tirano, pero dada la desproporción de fuerzas, es la comunidad internacional la que debe evitar el baño de sangre y ayudarles en su tarea. Entre los objetivos de la acción se cuenta mantener la integridad territorial de Libia y la soberanía nacional, ahora secuestrada por Gadafi.

Soberano es el Estado que sirve para proteger a su población. El gobierno que no protege a sus ciudadanos y que por el contrario se convierte en su principal enemigo no merece seguir gobernando. De ahí lo adecuado de la respuesta internacional. Es una hipocresía extrema escudarse en la condenable represión saudí en Bahrein para devaluar la resolución de Naciones Unidas. Lo ha hecho el jeque Nasrallah, líder de Hezbola, en Líbano, pero lo hacen también otras voces desde la derecha más reaccionaria, que apuesta por mantener el ‘status quo’ en Oriente Próximo y tiene los máximos recelos ante el despertar democrático de los árabes. Es el caso de la Liga Norte en Italia o del Frente Nacional en Francia, dos de las fuerzas que han rechazado la resolución de NNUU.

Ni la resolución ni la acción militar son insignificantes. Llegan tarde, pero no llegan demasiado tarde. Llegan a tiempo para evitar lo peor y a tiempo para dar vida de nuevo a la revuelta contra Gadafi y abrir el camino hacia la transición. Con estos mimbres el margen de acción es amplísimo. Sobre todo si sigue contando y manteniendo el consenso y el apoyo de la población libia y de la mayoría de los países árabes. La mayor baza de un dispositivo como el que se está organizando son los ataques a las fuerzas militares que se desplacen entre ciudades o apoyando a las fuerza rebeldes que se desplacen también de una ciudad a otra: el primer golpe aéreo contra cuatro blindados de Gadafi va en esta dirección. Militarmente a Gadafi solo le queda la posibilidad de atrincherarse en Tripoli para negociar la rendición y su salida. Sostener a sus tropas mercenarias sobre la extensa geografía libia, con el desequilibrio de fuerzas que tiene en el aire y en el mar, es una tarea imposible que le conducirá a la derrota rápidamente y a quedarse sin recursos para la defensa final.

Gadafi se halla cercado. Tiene enfrente a toda la comunidad internacional incluidos los países árabes en transición, Túnez y Egipto, pero también a los que quieren evitar nuevas revoluciones. La vía reformista, que permita el mantenimiento de los regímenes en plaza actualmente, pasa por eliminar al tirano libio. Los déspotas árabes que queden le deberían estar agradecidos, porque han ganado tiempo para reprimir a sus revoltosos y encauzar las energías revolucionarias. No cabe pensar, en cambio, en un ataque directo a Gadafi, inicialmente al menos, aunque según como evolucionen las cosas puede haber una escalada en los objetivos militares: no es una guerra en propiedad pero no puede descartarse que se convierta en una guerra abierta. Para proteger a la población civil nada mejor que liquidar al dictador. Pero no se puede hacer poniendo en riesgo precisamente a la población civil. Los bombardeos indiscriminados o los ataques a fuerza de Gadafi emboscadas en las ciudades deberán quedar tajantemente excluidos.

La acción emprendida a partir de la resolución 1973 es muy peculiar. Es tan legítima como la primera guerra del golfo o la invasión de Afganistán. Es tan moral como la guerra contra Serbia por Kosovo. Tiene incluso algo en común con la guerra de Bush en Irak: se trata de una coalición de voluntarios, con una muy notable característica, que no la dirige Estados Unidos sino Francia. La votación el jueves por la noche en el Consejo de Seguridad demuestra, de otra parte, un alto grado de consenso internacional. La abstención de China y Rusia, dos países con derecho a veto, es un voto condescendiente. La abstención de Alemania es, sobre todo, un problema para Alemania y para la Unión Europea, pero desde el punto de vista práctico también sirve: Merkel pone a disposición sus aviones-radar Awacs para actuar en Afganistán y libera así a los Awacs estadounidenses, que podrán colaborar en el cerrojo sobre Gadafi. Su participación en la reunión de París demuestra su compromiso político, aunque no militar, con el derrocamiento del dictador.

Estamos de nuevo ante un giro inesperado en la dinámica de las relaciones internacionales. Esta vez es consecuencia de la sorpresa árabe, una auténtica novedad histórica, de las que hace época, trastoca liderazgos y obliga a cambiar el paso a todos. Ban Ki-moon ya no es el peor secretario de Naciones Unidas de la historia. Sarkozy se está salvando. Los déspotas árabes se palpan la ropa y se convierten al reformismo. China y Rusia se apartan amablemente. No sabemos qué es Alemania. Israel se halla perpleja y asombrada: no es el ombligo del mundo y ni siquiera lo es de Oriente Próximo. Obama no actúa como el líder del planeta. Todos estos hechos constituyen la promesa de que vamos a seguir viendo cosas extraordinarias en los próximos tiempos.

Arab women: the powers that be

Saida Sadouni does not conform to the typical image of an Arab revolutionary. But this 77-year-old camped out in the bitter Tunisian cold for more than two weeks in front of the prime minister's headquarters, leading the historic Kasbah picket that succeeded in forcing Mohamed Ghannouchi's interim government out of office.

"I have resisted French occupation. I have resisted the dictatorships of Bourguiba and Ben Ali. I will not rest until our revolution meets its goals," she told the thousands of fellow protesters who joined her. She is today widely hailed as the mother of Tunisia's revolution, a living record of her country's modern history and its struggle for emancipation.

Sadouni is one of many Arab women from older generations who have joined the revolutions in their countries after decades of political activism. But most women activists today tend to be in their 20s and 30s, highly politicised yet unaffiliated to any organised parties -- young women such as Asma Mahfoudh, of Egypt's April 6 movement. This 26-year-old's interests had until recently been no different from those of any woman of her age. While surfing the net in 2008 she stumbled on calls for a general strike to demand an end to government corruption.

This initial encounter with protest "marked the beginning of a new chapter" in her life, as she puts it. Ever since, she has been an avid campaigner for change, joining a struggle that culminated in the ousting of Hosni Mubarak.

Even in ultraconservative Yemen demonstrations against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh have been led by a charismatic young woman, Tawakul Karman. She has campaigned since 2007 to demand political reform. When she was arrested in January, the authorities were forced to release her following a wave of angry protests in Sana'a. What has inspired these women and thrust them into the heart of protest is the yearning for change and political freedom that is sweeping across the region.

The Arab revolutions are not only shaking the structure of despotism to the core, they are shattering many decades-long myths. Foremost among these is the perception of the Arab woman as powerless and enslaved, forced into a cage of silence and invisibility by her jailor society. That is not the type of woman that has emerged out of Tunisia and Egypt in the last few weeks.

Revolutions

Not only did women participate in the protest movements raging in those countries, they have also assumed leadership roles there. The virtual and real battlefields have been incubators of female leadership. Arab women have been proving themselves through continual action on the ground, rather than in endless polemics behind closed doors.

These revolutions have been characterised by the open politics of the street, through which leaders have been tested, matured and approved. The movements have grown organically from the bottom, unrestricted by party hierarchy, age or outdated gender roles. The open parliaments of Kasbah and Tahrir Square -- where people met, communicated and expressed their political views freely -- brought everyone closer together, promoting collective identity over divisions of class, ideology, gender, religion and sect.

Another stereotype being dismantled is the association of the Islamic headscarf with passivity, submissiveness and segregation. Surprising as this may be, many Arab women activists choose to wear the hijab. Yet they are no less confident, vocal or charismatic than their unveiled sisters.

This new model of home-grown women leaders represents a challenge to two narratives. The first of these, which is dominant in conservative Muslim circles, sentences women to a life of childbearing and rearing, lived out in the narrow confines of their homes at the mercy of fathers, brothers and husbands. It revolves around notions of sexual purity and family honour, and appeals to tradition and reductionist interpretations of religion for justification.

The other is espoused by Euro-American neoliberals, who view Arab and Muslim women through the narrow prism of the Taliban model: miserable objects of pity in need of their benevolent intervention -- intellectual, political, even military -- for deliverance from the dark cage of veiling to a promised garden of enlightenment and progress.

Arab women are rebelling against both narratives. They refuse to be treated with contempt, kept in isolation, or be taken by the hand, like a child, and led on the road to emancipation. They are taking charge of their own destinies, determined to liberate themselves as they liberate their societies from dictatorship. The emancipation they are shaping with their own hands is an authentic one defined by their own needs, choices and priorities.

There is, and will be, resistance to this process of emancipation, as recent attacks on female protesters at Tahrir Square indicate. But the dynamic unleashed by the revolution is irreversible. Those who have led the struggle to dismantle the old regimes will no doubt remain at the forefront in rebuilding the new order on its ruins. Tahrir and Kasbah Square are now embedded in the psyches of Arab women and have given voice to their long-silenced yearning for liberation. -- Guardian News & Media 2011

Pluja de premis per a ‘Pa negre'

Eren la una de la matinada quan la productora Isona Passola pujava a l'escenari del Teatro Real de Madrid i deia, exultant: “Ha estat un plaer rodar en català, la nostra llengua; vosaltres ho heu entès i ho heu votat. Sempre aneu per davant, companys del cinema!”. Pa negre s'acabava d'endur el novè Goya de la nit. Minuts abans, Agustí Villaronga pujava per segona vegada, per rebre el guardó al millor director. Ja ho havia fet, un parell d'hores abans, per recollir el de millor guió adaptat. Marina Comas es va tornar a col·lapsar entre llàgrimes, com en els Gaudí, quan va guanyar el premi a la millor actriu revelació. Va ser el primer cop que es va sentir Pa negre a la gala de l'Acadèmia. Després arribaria el tercer Goya, per a Laia Marull (actriu de repartiment); el de millor actriu, per a Nora Navas, i el d'actor revelació, per a Francesc Colomer. També van caure el de millor direcció artística, per a Ana Alvargonzález, i el de fotografia, per a Antonio Riestra, que va definir aquest viatge a la Catalunya profunda com “un regal rere l'altre”. Agustí Villaronga va dir, en rebre el premi del guió: “Després de tants anys de ser vist com un bicho raro, estic molt satisfet d' aquest premi”, i el va voler compartir amb Emili Teixidor i la productora, Isona Passola.

D'altra banda, un film sobre un expresident de la Generalitat, Bicicleta, cullera, poma, va aconseguir el Goya al millor documental. Pasqual Maragall i Diana Garrigosa van acompanyar el productor, Oriol Ivern, a recollir el premi.

Ahir a Madrid, quan el Barça ja havia guanyat la copa del Rei contra el Reial Madrid, fins i tot l'espontani va ser català. Jimmy Jump va espatllar un dels moments culminants de la vetllada, quan va irrompre a l'escenari quan anaven a donar el cinquè Goya a Javier Bardem, com a millor actor per Biutiful. Portava l'habitual barretina i va parodiar un actor recollint un premi davant les mirades atònites de tothom.

También la lluvia va començar bé la vetllada, però al final només van tenir premis Karra Elejalde (actor secundari) i Alberto Iglesias (banda sonora original). Balada triste de trompeta partia com a favorita amb 15 nominacions, però només va obtenir els premis de millor maquillatge i efectes especials.

Why Faithless are giving Israel a miss

In December 2010 British electronic group Faithless’s lead singer Maxi Jazz wrote a note on his website to “family and friends of the band in Israel”.

He said: “We’ve been asked to do some shows this summer in your country and, with the heaviest of hearts, I have regretfully declined the invitation. While human beings are being willfully denied not just their rights but their needs for their children and grandparents and themselves, I feel deeply that I should not be sending even tacit signals that this is either ‘normal’ or ‘ok’.”

This adds Faithless to a lengthening list of artists, including Elvis Costello, the Pixies and the Gorillaz, who have refused to perform in Israel while it occupies parts of the Palestinian territories.

But the decision was not unanimous, said guitarist Dave Randall, in an interview with the Mail & Guardian. “Not everyone agreed that it was the right time to boycott Israel,” he said.

“Some of the views expressed were that our fans were from the more progressive part of larger society. But, no matter how progressive your fans are, a concert on that scale goes beyond those people. You are in effect saying it’s quite acceptable for business to continue as usual, which it is not.

“The other key reason for the boycott is that the Palestinian people on the oppressed end have themselves called for a boycott.”

Voice for human rights
Randall said that having a voice for human rights was his responsibility. “Musicians and artists are afforded a platform where we can talk about our views. When we are granted this platform, we have a responsibility to expose what’s going on in the world and suggest ways to change it.”

Randall said that cultural boycotts had their unique advantages. “Economic boycotts can be quite difficult when the government in question is propped up by United States funding to the tune of $3-billion a year. The advantage with a cultural boycott is that people are really interested in whether or not Faithless went to Israel -- and why.”

Randall said that Faithless faced pressure from sectors of the music industry when they took their decision, because “basic capitalist logic is resistant to boycotts”. He also said there was reluctance in the mainstream media to be overly critical of Israel, which could be why the band’s decision had not been widely reported.

Randall first visited Gaza while gigging in Israel. He has been there twice since then and four times to the West Bank. “The journey made me see that this is not a conflict between two equals,” he said. “I saw with my own eyes that Israel is behaving as an apartheid state.

“A question that usually arises is why we aren’t boycotting the US or Britain because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,” he said. “We can’t boycott Britain -- we live here -- and in the US the music market is so big that it would go unnoticed. If you’re serious about trying to make the world a better place, you have to be strategic.”

Faithless will perform in Cape Town on February 4 and Johannesburg on February 5.
